Barry Wilhite, 81 from Port Charlotte, FL passed away on November 10, 2025. He was born on July 8, 1944 to Herman Wilhite, Jr and Arline Hann Wilhite.
Barry graduated from Hillsborough High School in 1962, in Tampa Florida. In October of the same year, Barry joined the US Navy. He served for 20 years in the Submarine Service. After he left the service he took a job with RCA Government Services and continued to support his country for another 10 years, this time as a civilian. After he moved to Florida, he took a job at Fishermans Village in Punta Gorda, eventually working all the way up to General Manager. He left Fishermans Village to enjoy his retirement.
Barry had a wide array of interests, but a few of them were life long. He loved the water and loved to sail. He lived on a sailboat while still in high school and on the weekends he would help crew the boat in many races. He continued to love the water and eventually bought his own sailboat, which we ending up living on to almost 5 years. After we moved to Florida, cruise ships became our new “sailboat”.
But Barry was also very passionate about flying radio control airplanes. He began flying them in the 60’s and never stopped. He loved helping others learn to fly and always was willing to lend a hand when there was damage to a plane. Over the years he joined multiple clubs and often served as an officer in the clubs.
He also earned his private pilots license and owned a couple of ultralight airplane. And he loved to play the organ, golf, fly kites, play pickle ball, tennis, and even the occasional kayaking. He also enjoyed traveling both in the country and internationally and exploring everywhere he went. But there was absolutely nothing he liked better then spending time with family.
Barry is survived by his wife of 37 years Sue, his daughter Laura (Daniel), his grandson Patrick (Brittany) and his great grandson Harrison. As well as his brothers Gary (Aileen), Kevin (Elva) and Keith (Cindy). He is preceded in death by his mother and father and his older brother Ronald.
His service will be Thursday, November 20th at Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home. Address is 2405 Harbor Blvd, Port Charlotte. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 am. Service will begin at 11. We will then be escorting him to the Sarasota National Cemetery where they will have a short internment service at 1:30. Upon returning to PC we will have a reception starting at 3:30 at Eric’s house (Sue’s brother) at 5199 Collingswood Blvd, Port Charlotte.
