
school, he worked in his father's electronic repair and radio store next to the White House on Pennsylvania Ave. until he enlisted in the US Navy. After a short stint in the service, he returned to Maryland to receive a Business degree from the University of Maryland.
He was recalled to the Navy where he made over 60 aircraft carrier landings flying Corsairs, Hellcats and various other planes. He later became an instructor at Whiting Field, Florida. Ben was proud of the fact his students flew over 1000 hours without a mishap. He retired as a Lieutenant Commander at the NAS Dallas TX. Ben moved his family to Knoxville TN, where he received a teaching degree from the University of Tennessee. He taught high school JROTC and Math. After many years of teaching,
he took a regional management position with H & R Block in Princeton WV, and later in Wilson, NC. Ben and Norma made their final move to Punta Gorda, FL to take up tennis
and the good life.
Ben was a Past President of The Retired Officer's Association here in Punta Gorda and remained active for almost twenty years. Over the years he belonged to various fraternal organizations. He was a life-time member of Kiwanis and volunteered many times at their events. A tireless worker, he spent months single handedly cleaning up the debris at the entrance of Emerald Pointe after Hurricane Charley, which may later be known as BEN'S PARK.
Ben is survived by his wife of 63 years, Norma and three children, Gail John Schmuckle, Wes Donna Scott and Susan Bob Belcher; four grandchildren, Tiffany, Jessica, Jordan, and Matthew and two great-grandchildren, Shelby and Jaxon.
A Service celebrating Ben's life will be held at 2:00 pm, Friday November 14, 2008 at the Kays-Ponger & Uselton Funeral Home, 635 E Marion Ave, Punta Gorda, FL 33950 with the Rev Bill Klossner officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Tidewell Hospice, 5955 Rand Blvd, Sarasota, FL 34238.
