
Harry Loeb, 94, passed away on Wednesday, February 17, 2016 in Port Charlotte, FL. Harry was born in Germany and has resided in Port Charlotte since 1985. He fled Nazi-Germany as a teenager in 1939 only months before the outbreak of WW II. During the war, he lived in England. From 1945 to 1947 he served as a civilian employee of the US War Dept. (Dept. of Defense) in an intelligence unit attached to the US Army of occupation in Germany.
Harry was a Mechanical Engineering graduate of the Liverpool (England) Polytechnic Institute and he studied Applied Physics in a special program for engineers at New York University. He headed the Scientific Instrument Division of the Farrand Optical Company in Ney York. From 1968 to his retirement, he was head of the Analytical Instrument Division of the Carl Zeiss Co. of Germany for the US and Canada. In the early years of his semi-retirement he was a consultant to a number of companies.
Harry was as member of the American Physical Society, the American Optical Society and the Society for Analytical Chemistry. Harry was also Treasurer of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra from its start for more than 5 years. He was a trustee for Temple Shalom, Port Charlotte for 16 years.
Harry is survived by his son Harvey of Mt. Kisco, NY and daughter Marsha of Bedford Hills, NY, their respective spouses and four grandchildren. Harry was predeceased by his wife, Emmy.
Burial will be at Cedar Park Cemetery in Westwood, NJ.
