Born January 5, 1926 in Cambridge MA, Gordon Young died February 20, 2012 in Venice FL at age 86. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Jannette Soper, his daughters Caroline Young of Tampa FL and Maryanne "Tink" McDevitt of Jenkintown PA, sons-in-law Michael Hoad of Tampa and E. Ralph McDevitt III of Jenkintown, and granddaughters Ellen, Eliza and Grace McDevitt and Lillian Young.
Gordon's family moved to North Hollywood CA when he was 5 years old. He graduated from North Hollywood High School and then attended the University of California at Berkeley before graduating from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque on the Navy V-12 program with a degree in electrical engineering in 1946. He then worked for California Texas Oil Co [Caltex] for 37 years, living in England, Bahrain, Australia, Germany, New York NY and Dallas TX, and travelling to South Africa, Sumatra, Japan, Philippines and Indonesia.
Gordon met Jan Soper in her parents' pub in Shepperton, England when he began traveling as an oil company engineer. He loved pub games all his life, from "shove-ha'penny" to bridge to chess. Gordon was a square-dance enthusiast since moving to the US in 1968, and he was an avid sports fan whether watching or participating. Squash, sailing, wind-surfing and bicycling were favorite past-times, and he appreciated a Beefeater on the rocks at the end of the day.
