We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our Dad and Papaw, Terry (Smitty) Richard Smith, 77, of Port Charlotte, Florida, on Monday April 27th at his home.
Terry was born August 28, 1948 in Anderson, Indiana to Dwight R. And Patricia A. (Highbaugh)Smith.
He attended Pendleton Heights High School and entered the United States Army in October of 1967. Serving as a Heavy Equipment Operator specifically Crane Shovel. He was honorably discharged in September of 1970.
Soon after, he began his career with General Motors. Retiring in 2003 after more than 30 years.
Dad loved the outdoors, old cowboy shows and movies, and telling a good story. But most of all, he loved his family. His daughters and grandchildren were the light of his life, and nothing made him happier than being with them and watching them grow.
He may have been a big man, but he loved even bigger. He raised his girls with care and intention, making sure they could do just about anything—change their oil, bait a hook, start a campfire, build a shelf, drive a stick shift, sew a button, cook a meal, polish boots, and roast a hog!
To say he will be missed hardly captures the loss we feel.
Surviving are his daughters, Kaley (Shannon Campbell) Smith of Port Charlotte, Florida and Kara (Michael) Holman of Angola, Indiana. Sisters Karen (Robert) Landes of Anderson, Indiana. Cathy (Michael) Danner of Anderson, Indiana and Emily (Randy) Eskew of Anderson, Indiana; grandchildren, Bailey Holman, Kendall Holman, Jasmine Williams, Emery Holman, Cayda Holman, Macklin Holman, Taylor Floyd, Hannah Floyd and Evan (Keira Winans)Floyd and his many loved nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Honoring his wishes cremation has taken place and there will be a celebration of life Sunday June 7th at Ovid Community Church Family Life Center 793 East 600 South Anderson, Indiana from 2pm-6pm. With Military Honors at 4pm.
He found a second home in Florida and a celebration of life will be held there as well. Sunday June 21st at Harbour Heights Park in Deep Creek, Florida from 4-8pm.
