Kandice Pauline Fowler, beloved mother, grandmother, longtime love, sister, aunt, and friend, passed away peacefully in her home in Pitt Meadows, British Columbia, on May 15, 2026, at the age of 56, after years of health challenges.
Kandice was born on February 16, 1970, in Hay River, Northwest Territories, to Shirley Hudgson and Dennis Fowler. She was predeceased by her parents and by her sister, Tracy Ceperley.
Kandice is survived by her daughter, Ashley; her son-in-law, Trevor; her beloved grandchildren, Jocelyne and Lucien; and her longtime love, Wayne, whose care and devotion during her illness meant so much. She is also survived by her sister, Terri Jonuk; her cousin, Rhonda Fowler, whom she considered like a sister; and her nieces and nephews, Brandon Ceperley, Laura Ceperley, Gabriel Jonuk, and Alexa Jonuk. Her best friend, Sandra, and Sandra’s daughters, Ella and Ava, also held a very special place in Kandice’s heart. Kandice loved Ella and Ava as her own nieces.
Kandice possessed an unmistakable presence, radiating an aura of warmth, laughter, and light that people felt the moment she stepped into a room. She lived with passion, and with a heart that was never halfway in. She loved holidays, celebrations, and any excuse to have fun. With her infectious laugh, vivacious spirit, and playful nature, she loved to dance, goof around, and bring joy into ordinary moments. She loved reading, following the news, pop culture, trivia, Scrabble, and any chance to test her knowledge, especially if there was a little friendly competition involved. She moved through life with a “let’s rock and roll” spirit, bringing energy, humour, and heart wherever she went.
Kandice lived boldly and often led with her heart before anything else. She had a spontaneous spirit and a way of turning life into an adventure, sometimes unintentionally creating the kind of wild, funny stories people would remember for years. Kandice also had a gift for connecting with people; she could not walk down a street without finding someone to talk to, and often left a simple walk with a new friend.
Kandice loved nature and found peace outdoors. She was deeply protective of old-growth forests and had a special reverence for trees. Whenever she passed a large tree, she often had to stop, place her hand against it, and take a moment to feel grounded. Some of Ashley’s fondest memories are of walking with her around Buntzen Lake, exploring the forest trails near their home in Coquitlam, picking berries by the creek, and taking long bike rides along the dyke with Wayne. Kandice had a way of making ordinary moments feel full of love and memories that lasted.
Kandice was incredibly generous. Even when she did not have a lot, she gave freely, often finding more joy in giving something beautiful away than keeping it for herself. She had a caring heart for those with less and was always thinking of what she could share or offer to someone who needed it. Her generosity was especially felt by her family. She poured love into birthdays, Christmases, Halloweens, and Easters, often giving more than she had, and later brought that same overflowing love to her grandchildren. Many of Jocelyne’s and Lucien’s favourite things around the house came from Grandma.
Kandice’s Métis heritage was deeply important to her. She dedicated time to learning the Métis language, researched her roots with intensity, and carried deep pride in her history, culture, and community. She wore her Métis sash proudly. She travelled to Hay River with her mother before her mother’s passing, where she reconnected with her Métis family and roots. She was also especially proud of later driving across Canada solo, a journey that reflected her determination and love of adventure.
Above all, Kandice loved her family fiercely. She was deeply proud of Ashley and never missed a chance to tell others about her. She adored her grandchildren and would have given them the world if she could.
Kandice will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered. Though she is no longer with us, the love she shared so generously will continue to live on in the hearts of those who loved her.
Kisâkihitin - We love you.
