Vaghy, Marjorie

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother on April 23, 2021 in New Westminster.

She was born, Marjorie Dodd on Aug 26, 1937 in Stafford, England to parents Aaron and Charlotte. She was the youngest daughter of 14 children and is predeceased by all her siblings. Growing up she said the family didn’t have much money, but always had plenty of food to eat and warm clothes to wear.

At age 19, Marjorie sailed to Canada on the Queen Mary along with her childhood friend Pat. She always said the trip was the best week of her life, dancing away with a British football club that was on board. Shortly after arriving in Vancouver, she landed a job at BC Tel where she made many lifelong friends and continued to work until her retirement in 1992.

Marjorie was a wonderful mother to her three children, Maria (Dan), Carol, and Cliff (Jana); and a loving grandma to her seven grandchildren, Erin, Ryan, Allyson, Lindsay, Erica, Sam and Elliott. She is also remembered by many nieces and nephews in England.

Mom loved her grandchildren and was always happy to spend time attending their sporting events and dance recitals. In the last few years, she spent many hours playing store and school with her two youngest grandchildren. She loved knitting, reading, going to the casino, volunteering with the TELUS Ambassadors and meeting friends for lunch. She loved to travel and took many trips which included France, Hungary, Hawaii and a number of cruises. In her 70’s, she fulfilled a lifelong dream of travelling to Africa for a safari with her nephew, Julian. Her last trip was a European river cruise with a friend in 2019.

She will be remembered for her kindness, loyalty and generosity. We will miss you mum!

Due to Covid, a memorial service will be held at a later date.

We are so sad to hear of Marjorie's passing. We always enjoyed her visits with us at the hair salon. We loved hearing her stories and her sense of humour was very infectious! We have had so many laughs over many, many years with her. We will truly miss her.
Our deepest heartfelt condolences to her family.

My condolences to the family for your loss. I grew up as a teenager and into my late 20's know Mrs Vaghy (to me) as a friend of Maria and Carol and playing with Clifford. I remember her sweet tooth. She drank a two-litre bottle of coke a day, the fags she smoked, and the chocolate frozen cake she'd give us to eat after school. It may have been years since I last saw her but I remember her warm laugh.

Marj was a marvellous woman to know- a faithful friend to many. The picture you shared is how I will remember your Mom... a twinkle in her eye , loved a good laugh, a kind person.
Marj and my Mom worked years together , keeping in touch in their retirement years. They went on trips, volunteered in the community and liked their outings to the casinos.
May you find comfort in knowing so many people cared for your Mom. She was a gem.

As a young operator, I worked "taxi shifts" and saw your Mom each night for a few hours. Listening to her scold customers who treated us poorly created such a lasting impression with me of her support and kindness, and on many occasions her sense of humour!
A bunch of past colleagues got together last summer at the Blackberry Kitchen in Mission for a group lunch. It was so nice to catch up and see her again after so many years.
I am so sorry for your loss. She will be truly missed.
