Russ was raised in Richmond, BC, during a time when catching frogs in ditches and climbing the Steveston dunes were just part of growing up. He graduated from Steveston High, was an avid hockey and baseball player, and later went on to earn a black belt in karate before the onset of MS symptoms.
Despite the challenges posed by his illness, Russ' determination and work ethic never wavered. He proudly completed a diploma in computer programming at OLA, a testament to his resilience and perseverance.
Russ enjoyed traveling to Maui, listening to heavy metal, riding his recumbent bike on the dyke with Breeze, scootering to the Steveston dock with Shawn, and hanging out with buddies Mark, Mike, and “the boys” who appreciated his quirky sense of humour. Russ’ adventurous spirit lived on even when he could no longer move his body: taking the plunge over the Cheakamus River at Whistler Bungee in winter is just one bold example of his courage.
Russ is predeceased by his father Ron and is survived by his loving mother Wies, sisters Suzanne (Dave) and Lisa (Mac), brother Mike (Esther), nephews Keith and Will, and niece Ella. Russ was fortunate to have his mother take care of him for many years and had his sister Sue close by to ensure he was well looked after. Russ’ departure has left a hole in our hearts and he will be dearly missed. The family extends their gratitude to the Steveston RILS caregivers (2001-2017), Hawthorne Seniors Community Care staff and Russ’ Qualicare companions who treated him with dignity and respect. A private service will be held for family and close friends.
