March 14, 1949 – February 14, 2021
Salvador Pebanco Salaver Jr. was born on March 14, 1949 to his parents, Salvador Talagtag Salaver Sr. and Jimena Nietes Pebanco. He passed away peacefully on February 14, 2021. He is survived by Elvira Luz Salaver, his daughter Kathy, his two granddaughters Marisa and Tamia, and his daughter in law Janice.
At a young age, Salvador lost his father who passed away, and he found himself taking on the role of the main breadwinner of his family back home in the Philippines. He grew up with very little money, so this was a daunting task which he took on with pride as he always put family first. He managed to finish his schooling and then went on to work for a large telephone company at the time PLDT, this enabled him to support his family and keep everyone together. Salvador and Luz went to high school together, and then reconnected years later in 1972. They were eventually married in 1973, and through the sponsorship of Luz’s family, Violet and Vance Noriega, they were able to immigrate to Canada to try and build a better life.
They arrived in Canada June 24, 1974, pregnant with their first child. On July 7, 1974, Julius Anonuevo Salaver was born, 2 months premature with several complications which kept him in the hospital for 6 months. Their daughter Kathy was born 3 years later.
Salvador was hired for a nightwatchman job at a prestigious private gentleman’s establishment The Terminal City Club in 1974, and worked there until he eventually retired after 38 years of dedicated employment.
He encountered many struggles over the last decade. His son was diagnosed with a very rare type of cancer, which he eventually lost his battle with October 19, 2004. After losing their child, such an unimaginable loss, Salvador and Luz decided to go their separate ways.
Salvador lived independently for many years. It was only after a health scare that he gave in and took his daughter’s offer to stay and live with her. He was able to watch both his granddaughters grow into beautiful young ladies, he was able to attend Marisa’s graduation from the University of Oregon, he was able to travel back to the Philippines and see his family in 2015, and he was able to see his brother Alberto, and sister Nelly on what would be their last visit together in Canada in August 2019.
After a massive heart attack in March 2019, Salvador underwent quadruple bypass surgery at the Royal Columbian Hospital. He was in the cardiac ICU for a few days, and then was discharged home when his daughter took over his full-time care. What was expected to be a few months of recovery, turned into 2 years of specialists, hospital visits, several blood testing and procedures to try and diagnose his still undiagnosed Auto-immune / Inflammatory disease that was placing his body in a state of attacking itself. When the pandemic hit, Kathy and Marisa and Tamia all made the necessary changes and decided to mainly work and do schooling from home, to minimize Salvador’s exposure. He remained Covid free and did not have to be hospitalized.
On January 31, 2021-Salvador was feeling extremely weak from a mild chest cold he was battling for over a week. He made the decision to be brought to the Royal Columbian Hospital as his symptoms could no longer be managed at home. After 2 long weeks, trying to treat his bacterial infections, a round of chemotherapy and a new diagnosis of a rare Auto-immune multi- factorial organ disease HLH, Salvador passed peacefully in his sleep on the morning of February 14, 2021.
He was an amazing man, he fought to the end, and his memory and love for his family will forever be treasured. Rest in peace.
