Ellett Richard Klages, affectionately known as "Dick," passed away on November 18, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on June 4, 1935, in Manhattan, NY, Dick led a life full of love, adventure, and dedication to his family and friends.
Dick was the beloved husband of Suzanne for nearly 68 years. Their enduring partnership was a testament to their deep love and unwavering support for each other. He leaves his son, Richard (Rick) and daughter, Deborah. Father-in-law to Marie Klages and Lisa Agnew. His grandsons Richard B (Ricky), Evan and Owen.
He was also a much-loved brother to the late Donald Klages.
A proud retiree after 31 years as a pilot with American Airlines, Dick found great joy in his career, a job that he truly loved. His work allowed him to travel the world with Suzanne, and together they explored many beautiful places, including Greece, Brussels, Hawaii, and Belgium. Those travels were among the many adventures they shared over their nearly seven decades together.
Dick’s love for his family was evident in the little things he did every day. He was known for his special Christmas morning tradition: waking up early to light the tree, prepare the house, and have breakfast waiting for his children. An early riser, he often made sure to have breakfast ready for Suzanne as well, always thinking of others before himself.
Outside of his family, Dick enjoyed a variety of passions. He loved being outdoors, whether it was grilling on the barbecue, tending to his garden, or simply enjoying the fresh air. He had a special fondness for animals and was known for his infectious optimism and physical strength. One of his signature traits was his powerful grip, a symbol of his tenacity and strength in all aspects of his life.
Dick’s greatest joy, however, was playing golf. He was an active member of the Harbor Hills Golf men’s league, where he spent countless hours with friends on the course. After a day of golf, Dick could often be found enjoying a drink with his close-knit circle of friends, sharing laughter and stories. His friendships were deeply cherished, and he was known for being a loyal, kind-hearted companion.
Dick’s memory will live on through his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. His positive outlook, generous spirit, and love for life will be remembered by all who had the pleasure of spending time with him.
A memorial visitation will be held on Tuesday, December 9, 2025 from 4-6 PM at O.B. Davis Funeral Homes, 4839 Nesconset Highway, Port Jefferson Station, NY 11776. Prayer service at 4:30 PM at the funeral home.
Rest in peace, Dick. You will be deeply missed, but your legacy of love, laughter, and kindness will continue to inspire all who knew you.
