Sandra Tanner Barton, age 76, of Port Lavaca, Texas, passed away February 1, 2016. She was born on May 9, 1939 in Port Lavaca to the late W F Tanner and Phil Mavis Bucek Tanner. She graduated from Calhoun High School in 1957 and attended the University of Texas at Austin where she received a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education. She married her high school sweetheart, Richard Barton, June 10, 1961.
After graduating from UT, she spent 32 years teaching 1st grade for the Calhoun County ISD, first in Point Comfort and then at Harrison Elementary, retiring in 1994. Many of her grownup students would come up to her or a family member stating how she was one of their favorite teachers. After retiring, Sandra enjoyed life with all her friends and family—traveling, playing bridge and Mahjong, exercising with her YMCA group, and walking the bird walk.
Sandra truly enjoyed her life with a graceful style and through her rose colored glasses! She was pleasant and kind to all she came in contact with, even during the less than comfortable stages of her battle against cancer. She was witty, grateful and charming with all of the staff charged with her care and well-being.
Sandra is survived by her husband Richard Barton; daughters Robin Barton Sikes (Richard Sikes) and Cindy L. Barton; three grandchildren Alexandra Weed, Riley Sikes, Macy Elledge and one very special grand-furchild Juneau that she loved to watch on video cam at doggie day care; sister Phyllis Tanner Elliott and nephew Mark S. Elliott of Nashville.
The family would like to thank the staff of MD Anderson, Memorial Medical Center ER, Accolade Hospice, and the many friends and family that have been so very supportive to us during this journey. Thank you, we are truly grateful.
The Memorial Service will be held Thursday, February 4, 2016 at 1pm at the First United Methodist Church, 814 N. San Antonio Street, Port Lavaca, TX. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the Calhoun County Library, 200 W. Mahan Street, Port Lavaca, Texas 77979 or donor’s choice.
