He firmly believed in doing the best you can with the cards you’re dealt, a philosophy he carried with him every day. He began his dentistry career in the Air Force in Tacoma, Washington, in 1973. Two years later, he moved to Florida, where he established his family dentistry practice in 1975.
His passion for serving others led him to create multiple charitable initiatives, starting in the founding of HANDS Dental Clinic an organization dedicated to expanding access to healthcare for low-income residents. He also established Project Christmas Smile, guided by his belief that no one should wake up on Christmas Day with a toothache. Over the years, Project Christmas Smile grew into a tri-county effort, expanding to seven locations, including a dental clinic at Indian River State College.
After more than 50 plus years of dedicated service to his community, Dr. James L. Strawn retired on December 31, 2024. Full of life and adventure, he found his greatest joy on the water whether deep sea fishing or simply soaking in the peace of the ocean. He was also an avid snow skier, always chasing the thrill and freedom he found outdoors.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jessi Strawn; his two daughters, Emily Kavanagh and Jessica Strawn; his stepson, Deven Gray; and his cherished granddaughter, Anna Joy Kavanagh. His love, strength, and spirit will live on in each of them.
He will be remembered for his adventurous soul, his resilience, and the warmth he so freely shared with those around him. Though he is no longer with us, his legacy reminds us to embrace life fully and make the most of every hand we’re given.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Aycock at Tradition, 12571 Tradition Parkway, Port St. Lucie, FL 34987, US, on April 25, 2026, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm with a Memorial Service to follow at 1pm.
