Mazula Narcisse Calixte, affectionately known as “Aya,” was born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti on January 3, 1930, to Elizabeth Moise and Marius Narcisse. She was a woman of deep faith, strength, resilience, and unwavering love for her family.
Aya received her early education in Haiti, where she attended religious school taught by nuns. After completing her studies, she pursued vocational training and learned the trade of sewing. As a skilled seamstress, she lovingly crafted clothing for women in her community. She later owned and operated a boutique in Haiti, where she sold grocery items and faithfully served her neighbors.
Aya married Ferdinand Calixte, and in 1967 she came to America in search of greater opportunities. In May 1969, she returned to Haiti to bring her mother and children to begin a new life in New York City. She worked diligently as a seamstress while raising her family. In 1972, she returned to Haiti to help raise her grandchildren. From that time on, Aya traveled faithfully between the United States, Canada and Haiti, dedicating her life to nurturing and supporting her children and grandchildren.
Aya was the devoted mother of five children: Marie-Rose, Jean-Robert Sr., Fernande, Berthony, and Jocelyne. She formed a special bond with the spouses of her children, Ketty, Jean-Claude, and Frantz and loved them as if they were her own. She was a proud and loving grandmother to Jean Jr., Patricia, Kettly, Mitchell, Bethanny, Tarly, Sherry, Roberta, Latisha, Claudia, Francesca, Christopher, Olivier, and Lisa. She was also blessed with many great-grandchildren: Ciamara, Cheyenne, Cayden, Sean Jr., Jahvonni, Jayden, Shyla, Chyna, Aries, Alexis, Dominic, Tyler, Kathy, Christian, Michael, Marc-Andre, Ly’jah, Devyn, Mardochee, Michaelle, Kathy, Ashley, Smith and the newest addition, Edwin.
She shared a special bond with her nieces—Madeline, Noemie, Anne Marie, Monica, Gertrude, Rose Marie, and many others—leaving a lasting impression on each of their lives.
Aya was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ferdinand Calixte; her parents, Elizabeth Moise and Marius Narcisse; her four brothers; and six sisters, including Marianna Narcisse, Madam Leon Narcisse Blaise, Madam Margaret of Haiti, and Carmen, and her son, Berthony Calixte in 1989 along with others who preceded her in death.
Aya loved telling stories, cooking meals filled with love, raising children, and offering wisdom and guidance to anyone in need. She was known for her generosity and willingness to help others. She enjoyed traveling, especially to New York, Montreal, and Haiti, and cherished the time spent with family.
Throughout her life, Aya witnessed many historic and challenging events, including the 2010 earthquake in Haiti and the global coronavirus pandemic. Through every trial and season, she remained steadfast in her faith in God.
