Nordhen Joy Awal, affectionately known by many as Pop Pop, Nio, Pops, and Dad, passed away on May 28, 2025, in Port St. Lucie, Florida, at the age of 77. Born on February 13, 1948, in New York, New York, Nordhen lived a life marked by resilience, devotion, and a deep appreciation for both family and tradition.
A proud veteran, Nordhen served two tours during the Vietnam Era with the Army Corps of Engineers. His time in service reflected his steadfast nature and commitment to duty—qualities that would define him throughout his life. Whether working with heavy machinery or offering guidance to those around him, he approached every task with precision and purpose.
Nordhen had a lifelong fascination with machines—especially those used for digging—and found joy in understanding how things worked. This mechanical curiosity was matched by his love for classic cinema. He was an avid fan of martial arts films, science fiction adventures, spy thrillers, and black-and-white classics. Old Westerns and Fred Astaire performances held a special place in his heart; anything vintage spoke to his soul.
He shared his life with his beloved wife Gloria Awal and was a devoted father to Lorenza Awal - Maisonave and the late Yesenia Joi Awal. His bond with his granddaughter Cadence Maisonave was especially profound; he poured endless love into her life and took great pride in watching her grow. Nordhen also cherished his relationships with his nieces and nephews and maintained close ties with his siblings and in-laws. He was a guardian figure to many—always watching over those he cared about.
Nordhen’s home was never complete without the presence of dogs he loved like children. His loyalty extended beyond family to friends and coworkers alike; he formed lasting bonds wherever he went. Known as a straight shooter who never took anything for granted, Nordhen’s honesty and integrity left an indelible mark on all who knew him.
He is survived by his wife Gloria Awal; daughter Lorenza Awal – Maisonave; Son-In-Law Michael Maisonave; granddaughter Cadence Maisonave; five siblings; numerous loving nieces and nephews; and chosen family members who were embraced as kin. Though preceded in death by his daughter Yesenia Joi Awal, Nordhen’s legacy lives on through the stories shared by those who loved him.
May the memory of Nordhen Joy Awal bring comfort to all whose lives he touched.
