She was born in Antioch, CA on Jan. 27, 1939 to Kalianthe Liatsos and Nicholas Yiotos. At the age of 8, Anna, sister Lefcothea, called “Lefty”, and their parents moved to Portland. Her parents owned and operated the Fessenden Square Market, a small corner grocery store. Upon graduating from Deering High school in 1956, Anna began working at the Canal Bank in a clerical position. In 1960s she left the bank and she and Lefty began operating the market. Also in 1960, Anna’s friend Don Lary fixed her up with a friend of his, C.G. “Nick” Trouvalis. The two fell in love and married Nov. 12, 1960.
In 1968, Anna and Lefty sold the market. Later, Anna began working at C. Dalfonso Construction Co. as their bookkeeper. In 1978, Anna & Nick began Northgate True Value Hardware and operated it for 19 years. Anna was vice-president & treasurer as well as bookkeeper, sales person, house-wares manager and cash register operator. She could do it all! And, for a few years, Anna continued to work part-time at C. Dalfonso. In 1997, she & Nick decided to retire and they liquidated the business. After a few months, she decided retirement wasn’t for her and she began an almost 20 year career at Intermed as a medical records clerk.
Anna was a wonderful wife and mother to daughters, Tracy and Kathleen, a top notch cook and Greek pastry chef extraordinaire. At Easter time, she would make the absolute best-ever baklava, not only for her family but for certain doctors at Intermed. Besides her family, Anna had many loves: Her faith, singing in the church choir, cats (8 over the years – her current cat Lucy is in Nick’s care.), Pam and Anna’s many other friends at Intermed, good neighbors, singers Tom Jones and Josh Groban, t.v. shows Perry Mason, Columbo, Murder-She-Wrote, Blue Bloods and many game shows, family dinners (She could easily have been an award-winning chef), annual Fall foliage trips to the White Mountains, eating batter fried clams at Ken’s Place (For 62 years), Dinners out with friends, including close friends Don and Mary Lary and Phil and Joan (“Scottie”) Candelmo, playing poker with Nick, Don and Mary, comedians Billy Crystal, Christopher Guest and other on SNL and Sebastian Maniscalco, NFL Football and Tom Brady. Anna was a gentle soul, beautiful inside and out, a very good person (in 1960’s parlance, she was “Good People”) and a wonderful wife, mother and friend. To know Anna was to love her.
She was predeceased by her parents Nick and Kalianthe Yiotos, sister Lefty Poulos and brother-in-law Nick Poulos. Surviving are husband Nick, daughters Tracy Shuffels (husband Mark) and Kathleen Jacobsen, nieces Dianna Sanders (husband Sam), Stephanie Torruella (husband Juan), Kellee Morris and Robbin Morrs, nephews Nick & Ernie Poulos and 11 grandnieces & nephews.
The family wishes to thank Anna’s PCP, Dr. Peter Emery of Intermed, for his care of Anna for many years, and the care team of the Maine Medical Center’s Richard Wing R-3 and Dr. Lawrence Harvey.
