She was born on July 19, 1926, in Brockton, Mass., the daughter of May Sullivan and John William Condon. She grew up in Brockton with her sisters, Alice and Grace, and was particularly close to her cousin, Margie Lehan. Summers were spent in Onset on Buzzard's Bay.
Barbara attended elementary school in Brockton, Dean Academy in Franklin, and Westbrook Junior College (now the University of New England) in Portland. There she met her husband, Darius Mark Labbe, better known as Rock. She received a degree in education at Bridgewater State Teachers College in Massachusetts and began her teaching career in Brockton. She returned to Portland where she and Rock married and started a family of four daughters, making their home on Sanborn Street where she lived for 54 years.
At one point in the 1960s, Barbara served as president of the Women's Riverside Golf Association while Rock served as president of the Men's RGA. They later joined the Woodlands in Falmouth.
Mrs. Labbe taught first grade at West School in Portland from 1969-1980. She loved watching birds at her feeders. A lifelong gardener, she made a game of planting flowers that were named for family members. She instilled a love of reading in her daughters and grandchildren, often giving gifts of books. Although very reserved, she had a wonderful sense of humor, and enjoyed putting a good spin on stories and anecdotes. At Dean Academy, she was named 'Class Wit.'
Her daughters would like thank her neighbors on Sanborn Street and her caregivers at the Monarch Center in Saco for watching out for her while respecting her private ways.
Barbara was predeceased by her husband in 1990. She is survived by her four daughters, Deborah (Mrs. Ronald) Brown of Cumberland Foreside, Stephanie (Mrs. Wayne) Wallace of Atkinson, N.H., Jacquelyn (Mrs. William) Drummey of Phoenix, Ariz., and Daphne Labbe Millay of Portland. She is also survived by six grandchildren, Michelle Brown, Kelly Brown Doucette, Patricia Drummey Stiegel, Matthew Drummey, Joseph Millay and Monica Millay. She has two great-grandchildren, Oriah and Darius Doucette.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 673 Stevens Ave., Portland. Interment will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Yarmouth.
