

PORTLAND - Catherine Chase, 85, of Grafton Street, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 29, 2017 at Gosnell Memorial Hospice House with her family by her side. She was born on August 12, 1932 in Brockton, Massachusetts. Catherine was the youngest daughter of Magorisk Walls and Elsie (Ames) Walls. She had seven brothers and sisters. Catherine was raised in Rockland, Massachusetts and is a graduate of Rockland High School. On September 6, 1958 Catherine married James B. Chase. They moved to Portland, Maine in 1970. She worked for the City of Portland in the public school system for 20 years. She retired in August of 1995 as the secretary of Nathan Clifford School. Catherine loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was an avid reader and Boston sports fan.
Catherine was predeceased by her daughter, Debra Ann O'Brion; her mother and father; sisters, Margaret Allen and Eleanor Littlefield; brothers, Buzz, David and Tom Walls.
She is survived by her husband James; brothers, Richard Walls, Gerald Walls and his wife Eileen; daughter, Patricia Peterson and her husband David; sons, Ken Chase, Kevin Clancy and his wife Lynda; son-in-law, Richard O'Brion and daughter-in-law, Cindy Chase. Catherine is also survived by 10 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren as well as many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to thank the staff at The Cedars and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House. Friends and relatives are invited to a time of visitation from 2-5 pm on Saturday, January 6, 2018 at Jones Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St. Portland. A private interment will be held in the spring.
