

She was born in Portland daughter of the late Charles and Maria Roditis Michalaros.
Emily was a graduate of Portland High School, Westbrook College and in 1950 she graduated from Boston University.
She taught in the English Department at Portland High for 25 years, having taught thousands of students in English Literature, AP English and writing.
She was an active member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Portland and a member of Daughters of Penelope and Philoptochos Society of Portland. Emily was also a member of St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Fort Lauderdale, FL.
Emily enjoyed being with her family, relaxing on the beach, walking, reading and traveling. She spent her summers in Maine and winters in Fort Lauderdale by the Sea, FL.
Besides her parents, Emily was predeceased by her brothers; James Michalaros and Homer Michal (Michalaros) Esq.
She is survived by her husband of 60 years, Christopher J. Makrides of Portland, her son Dr. John C. Makrides and his wife Carol of Cape Elizabeth, her daughter Catherine M. Tognoni and her husband Keith of Atlanta, GA, her sister, Helen Spirounias of Scarborough and four grandchildren, Christina M. Tognoni, Robert E. Tognoni, Christopher J. Makrides and Aphrodite S. Makrides
She was much loved and will be missed by all.
Family and friends are invited to a time of visitation Monday December 19, 2011 from 4 -8 p.m. at the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford St. Portland. A Trisagion Service will be held at 7p.m.
Funeral services will be held at 11a.m. Tuesday at the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church 133 Pleasant St. Portland.
Interment will follow in Forest City Cemetery South Portland.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.
