

PORTLAND: Ferris S. Ray, M.D., of Falmouth died Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Maine Medical Center surrounded by his family. He was the husband of Carolyn McCurdy Ray.
Dr. Ray was born in Bangor, Maine on August 25, 1927, son of the late Joseph and Elsie ( Lewis ) Ray. He graduated from Shedd Memorial High School in Eastport, Maine in 1946. After high school, he joined the United States Army where he served in Germany for one year. He returned to the United States and entered the University of Maine in Orono where he graduated in 1950. He then studied medicine at Tufts Medical School in Boston where he graduated in 1954. Dr. Ray had planned to practice family medicine but during his internship, his skill in surgery led him to a surgical residency at Maine Medical Center.
He married his wife, Carolyn, on June 14, 1958 in Lubec, Maine. They lived in the Portland area then moved to Falmouth where they raised their children and resided there for 50 years.
Dr. Ray had a celebrated career working as a vascular surgeon at Maine Medical Center for 40 years. He and his colleagues performed the first kidney transplant in Maine in 1971. Dr. Ray was known for his skill as a surgeon, his compassion for his patients, and his love of teaching. Medical Students at the University of Vermont School of Medicine chose him to be an honorary member of Alpha Omega Alpha in 1991.
Dr. Ray had a zest for life and was also passionate about his hobbies, including fly fishing, gardening, and golf. He was devoted to his wife and family, and especially enjoyed spending time with his eight grandchildren.
Besides his wife of 52 years, he is survived by his two older brothers, Ralph Ray of Perry and Kenneth Ray of Los Osos, California. He is also survived by his daughter, Susan Gooch and her daughter Sarah of Cumberland, his daughter, Katherine Ray and her children Ryan and Molly Maguire of Yarmouth, his son Christopher and his wife Beth Ray and their children Nicholas, Andrew and Katy Ray of Cumberland, and his son James and his wife Karen Ray and their children Caroline and Matthew Ray of Falmouth.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Wednesday, September 1, 2010 at 12:00 p.m. at Holy Martyrs Catholic Church, 266 Foreside Rd, Falmouth, ME. Interment will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery, 9 Waites Landing Rd, Falmouth, ME
