

Henry R. Noring, 93, of Portland, Maine, passed away peacefully at Gosnell House Hospice September 15, 2015, following a short illness. Mr. Noring was born in Lawrence, MA October 8, 1921, a son of Henry N. and Blanche R. Noring. Following graduation from Deering High School, he graduated from Worcester Polytechnic Institute. During World War II, he completed Merchant Marine officer training at Maine Maritime Academy and subsequently served honorably as an engineering officer on the troop ship Bartholomew Gosnold
For most of his professional career, Mr. Noring was employed at Engineering Services in Portland. In addition, he was a trusted and highly respected appraiser of estates and antiques. He was remarkably generous sharing his time and knowledge, including compiling a comprehensive inventory of the contents of the Victoria Mansion, for which he was made a life member of the Victoria Society of Maine; and leading for nearly 15 years the antiques study class of the Westbrook College Woman’s Literary Union, all performed by him complementary as a labor of love.
Mr. Noring took great pride in his impeccable appearance and proper clothing, which usually consisted of a pressed suit, starched shirt, bow tie, polished shoes, and appropriate hat and coat. Despite this outward appearance of formality, he was laid back with a keen sense of humor. He was well read, thoroughly conversant on current events, and always open to the ideas and opinions of others. For many years he regularly attended the Portland Symphony and Portland Concert Series; and he especially enjoyed the Portland Municipal organ summer concert series,
Mr. Noring was predeceased by brothers Benjamin and Robert and sister Barbara Welch. He is survived by his son Joseph Chawes of Westbrook; his sister June Durost of Jay; and nieces and nephews Elizabeth Black, Judy Diaz, Betsy Haney. William Welch, and Frank Welch,
A memorial service will be held at date to be announced. The family suggests that any donations be made to Gosnell House Hospice, Scarborough, Maine.
Care for Mr. Noring has been entrusted to the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home of Portland.
