Born in Dexter to Burns Rockwell and Joyce Nowell Sparrow, He was educated in Newport schools and studied music at the University of Maine in Augusta. He eventually moved to the Portland area where his lifelong love of music became not just a passion but a career he truly loved. Well known for his love of animals, cooking his favorite haddock chowder and the sangria he made to go with it. Jeff was a practical joker with a great sense of humor. He loved to laugh and make others laugh.
Jeff loved travel including trips to faraway lands including Europe and Portugal, as well as local favorites like Pine Point in Scarborough. He loved to garden, growing basil and herbs in his back yard and he also loved antiques. Jeff loved the live music scene and going to concerts with Cathy. He renovated an old house in South Portland before he and Cathy moved back to Portland. No afternoon was complete without a long walk with his dog Harry, always his loyal companion.
He was predeceased by his father Burns and his sister Kathy.
Jeff is survived by his loving wife Cathy and a large and supportive music family here in Southern Maine. He also leaves his mother, Aunt Punk and Uncle Edwin, his sisters Shelley (Eric) Martin, and Vicki (Steven) Amsden, several nieces and nephews and his cousins. He will be sadly missed by his dog Harry and by his four cats.
Cathy wishes to thank the staff at Maine Medical Center and Gosnell Memorial Hospice House for their incredible, compassionate care.
Friends and family are invited to a time of visitation on February 27, 2025, from 4 PM to 6 PM followed by a memorial service at 6 PM. A benefit in Jeff's memory to benefit Hospice Home Care is planned for some time in the spring.
Those wishing to make donations may do so in Jeff's name to the Animal Refuge League of Greater Portland.
