Florida - It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Joanne (DiPietro) Soucy, a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt, and cherished friend to many. Joanne passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, after a brief illness. She leaves behind a legacy of love, tradition, and community service that will never be forgotten.
Joanne was born and raised in Portland, Maine, where she supported athletic events as a cheerleader and graduated from Portland High School. She was the proud daughter of Italian immigrants who opened DiPietro’s Italian sandwich shop on Cumberland Avenue, where the values of family, hard work, and generosity were deeply rooted and carried through her entire life.
Joanne met the love of her life, Bob, in 1959. Together, they built a beautiful marriage that spanned 65 wonderful years, raising five children and creating a home filled with laughter, warmth, and unwavering love. Family was everything to Joanne— Sunday dinners and holidays were always special gatherings that lasted hours. She cherished spending time with family, traveling the world with friends and family, and wintering in Florida. She was also a big fan of slot machines.
A dedicated homemaker and tireless volunteer, Joanne was a pillar in the South Portland community. She lent her time and talents to countless causes over the years, including organizing pasta dinners—known for serving her famous meatballs and sauce, volunteering at the SPHS concession stand and bingo nights, passionately supporting the SPHS Quarterback Club, and assisting her political party during elections and at the polls. Her deep commitment to her community earned her the Robert Ganley Public Service Award.
Joanne was pre-deceased by her loving parents, Grace and Warren DiPietro, and her three brothers, Carmine (Anna), Santo (Helen), and Joseph.
Joanne is survived by her devoted husband, Robert Soucy, her five children, Lisa Morrison (Scott), Ann Foley (Jim), Rob Soucy (Kim), Mike Soucy (Erin) and Marc Soucy (Samantha), fourteen grandchildren – Paul Morrison, Michael Morrison, Leeann Morrison, Lauren (Foley) Lawson, Sean Foley, Brett Soucy, Grace Soucy, Robbie Soucy, Joey Soucy, Samantha Soucy, Annalise Soucy, Sage Soucy, Carmine Soucy, Sadie Soucy, and three great-grandchildren – Scott Morrison, Taylor Morrison and Jack Lawson, sister-in-law Eleanor DiPietro, along with many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will carry her memory forward.
Joanne, affectionally known as “JiJa” to many, made a difference in countless lives. Her warmth, generosity, and sincere devotion to family and community leave a lasting imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing her. She will be deeply missed, but her spirit will continue to shine through the traditions she began and the love she shared.
Family and friends are invited to attend a time of visitation on Thursday, April 24, from 3 pm – 6 pm at Jones, Rich & Barnes Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, April 25 at 10:00 am at St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, 72 Federal St. Portland, Maine. Burial will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in South Portland, Maine.
