Lawrence S. Deering, Jr.

Lawrence S. Deering Jr. Age 86, of Portland Maine died peacefully on Friday, March 19 at Maine Medical Center with his family by his side.

He was born in Portland the son of Lawrence and Anna (Russo) Deering. He Graduated from Portland High School. At age 17 he enlisted in the Army and served for 23 years. His specialty was percussion player in the Army Band. His declaration medals include the national defense service medal with one oak leaf cluster and the good conduct metal bronze class with four loops.

After retiring from the Army he worked for a short time at the Portland Post Office. He then pursued his passion of culinary arts. He was owner and operator of the West Custogo Inn in Yarmouth from 1972-1979. He then managed the New England Telephone cafeteria in Portland for a few years.

He retired from managing the Elks Club where he was a member. He was also a member of the Italian Heritage Club and the VFW.

He was a long time communicant of St. Peters Church. He enjoyed cooking at the church suppers. His passion for cooking was appreciated by everyone at the church.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. His generosity and warm smile touched many people. He had a passion for life that drew from his faith. He enjoyed spending time with his sons fishing, boating and camping. He was an exceptional drummer and played with local bands. He had a passion for jazz music.

He was predeceased by his wife Evelyn Ciampi.

He is survived by his two loving children Lawrence S III , Louis and his wife Debbie (White) Deering. He will be greatly missed by his four grandchildren who he adored; Danielle, Alex, Nicholas and Kaitlyn.

Visiting hours will be held on Tuesday March 23 from 9 to 10:30AM at the Jones, Rich, and Hutchins Funeral Home 199 Woodford St. Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Peter’s Catholic Church 72 Federal St. Portland at 11:00 AM Tuesday. Interment will immediately follow at Calvary Cemetery with Military Honors being provided by the Maine Honor Guard.
