She was born on July 31, 1933 in Waterboro to Austin and Helen (Meserve) Carpenter.
Pat was raised on the family farm in Waterboro and graduated from Waterboro High School in 1951. She attended Gray Business School in Portland and later went to work for Union Mutual Insurance Company. She married Lloyd B. Haskell, Jr. in 1958 and they had three sons.
