After a long battle with cancer, William Andrew Demicco, M.D. (DrBill), of Scarborough, Maine, passed quietly at Northern Light Mercy Hospital on July 6, 2025 with his wife and elder son by his side.
He was born on Norwich, CT on March 2, 1947 to Michael J. Demicco and Agatha (Cox) Demicco. He was the eldest of five children and grew up in Jewett City, CT among many aunts, uncles and cousins, all of whom contributed to the operation of the family florist business, Jewett City Greenhouses, which still continues today under Demicco ownership.
DrBill graduated from Norwich Free Academy and received his Bachelor degree from Wesleyan University in 1969. He then went on to study medicine at Tufts University Medical School, graduating in 1973. While at Tufts in Boston, he met the one love of his life, Marie (Davenport) Demicco, whom he married on May 20, 1972.
DrBill continued his medical education with internship and residency at Boston City Hospital, and his pulmonary medicine fellowship at Tufts New England Medical Center.
1978 Dr. Bill moved his family (now with 3 small children) to Scarborough, Maine to join the pulmonary practice of Dr. Dermot Killian at Mercy Hospital. Those were busy years as the practice grew, adding another partner Dr. Lewis Golden. But family life took priority and he was always deeply involved with his children’s activities.
DrBill remained at Mercy Hospital until December 2015, serving at various times as President of the Medical Staff, Head of the Special Care Unit, and on many other committees. He was member of the American College of Chest Physicians and other professional organizations.
DrBill was known by all as a true Renaissance man, as well as being an astute diagnostician and caring and compassionate healer. He was a painter, a fisherman, a kayaker, a world traveler, a musician, a gardener, a formidable bridge player, a ballroom dancer, a golfer, a gourmand, and a barbecue master and mixologist. Above all, he was devoted husband and father.
In retirement, DrBill enjoyed annual winter family vacations to St Croix, USVI, where the entire family would gather in lieu of the busyness of Thanksgiving and Christmas holiday travel.
Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years Marie ( Davenport) Demicco, son Benjamin M. Demicco and his wife Tamara (Anderson) Demicco, grandson Andrew M. Demicco, granddaughter Lillian R. Demicco, all of North Oxford, MA; son Matthew R. Demicco and his partner Elaine Tu of Herndon, VA; and Dr Elizabeth G. Demicco of Toronto, Ontario, Canada
In addition, he is survived by siblings Dr. James Demicco, Robert Demicco, PhD, Dr. Deborah Demicco, and Peter Demicco, their spouses and children.
Friends and family are invited to a Celebration of DrBill's Life on Wednesday September 17th at 11 AM at the Higgins Beach Association Club House on Greenwood Avenue in Scarborough followed by a luncheon. Parking is available on Ocean Avenue in the Scarborough town lot. Private interment will be at Black Point Cemetery in Scarborough, ME.
We are forever grateful to all the love shown by family, friends, neighbors, and especially by his extended family from Northern Light Mercy Hospital during our difficult journey.
In lieu of flowers we ask that contributions be made to the Mercy Robert J Masterson Nursing Scholarship Fund, because DrBill knew that caring nurses are the keystone to patient wellness.
