At a young age Alan’s family relocated from Cottage Grove to Portland where Al attended local schools. After high school he became a student at the University of Oregon. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Recreation and Park Management in 1978.
Al had a talent for organizing and coordinating gatherings of all types and sizes. His unique abilities in event planning took him all over throughout his career. In 1983, while working for the City of Eugene, he organized an annual celebration called “The Eugene Celebration”, which is still an ongoing event. Later in his career, he moved to Palm Springs where he worked as the special events coordinator and recreation manager for the city overseeing the “Thursday Evening Series”. At one point he moved to Texas where he worked for the USO and later KBR as a civil contractor in Iraq planning special events for the U. S. military servicemen.
Al was a world traveler, back packing through Europe while in college, and also visiting Baghdad, South Africa, Aruba, Maldives, Iraq, Thailand and more.
As a graduate of the University of Oregon with exceptional skills in event production, Al became an instructor teaching graduate level courses in tourism, special events promotion & management and marketing. In 1987 he traveled to South Korea to teach American military employees how to produce special events so they would be prepared for the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul.
