Andrzej Szewczyk died unexpectedly on Wednesday, January 27, 2021 while on vacation in Honolulu, Hawaii. He is survived by his wife of 46 years, Elzbieta Szewczyk; his daughters, Beata and Monika, and their spouses; three grandsons, Kieran, Dylan and Arden; and five sisters, Janina Pokojska, Aleksandra Dziubinska, Barbara Szarek, Elzbieta Szewczyk and Jolanta Kubas.
Andrzej was born in Radomsko, Poland on May 16th, 1947, the eldest of six children. His youth was split between Radomsko and Wroclaw. Andrzej studied and apprenticed as a glassblower from 1964-1971 at the Institute of Low Temperature and Structure Research of the Polish Academy of Sciences in Wroclaw. Among his favorite pastimes were climbing and exploring caves in Poland.
Andrzej left Poland in 1972 for Austria, where he was granted refugee status from the United States. He arrived in New York that same year, and soon after moved to Chicago, where he spent the next 17 years.
Andrzej and Elzbieta met in 1973 and married on June 22, 1974 in Chicago. Together they enjoyed dancing in the Polonez dance group, taking road trips, camping, fishing, hiking and celebrating with extended family and close friends. Andrzej worked as a master glassblower throughout his 17 years in Chicago. In his spare time, he created beautiful glass sculptures, which were displayed at the Art Institute of Chicago, Evanston Art Center, and Edgewood Orchard Galleries in Wisconsin.
Andrzej and his family moved to Portland, Oregon in 1989 after accepting a position with Weiss Scientific (now Tosoh Quartz), where he worked until his retirement in 2017. In Oregon, Andrzej had the opportunity to embrace his love for the outdoors and deepen his engagement in the Polish Catholic Church. Together with Father Richard Philiposki, Andrzej and Elzbieta helped to organize and run the Polish Festival in Portland in 1994; they remained intensely involved in the early years of the annual festival before slowly handing it over to the next generation. He loved hosting family and friends from out of town, showing them everything that Oregon has to offer, and organizing backpacking trips, especially at his favorite location – the Wallowa Mountains. He became a youth minister at St. Stanislaus, where he enjoyed sharing his two passions (the outdoors and religion) with the church youth. He also loved international travel – pilgrimages to holy sites and visits to Poland and numerous other destinations to see family and friends.
Andrzej is remembered most for his sense of humor, his selflessness, his unwavering faith, and for inspiring others to share his love of nature. He was always ready to help any friends or loved ones in need. Throughout his 73 years, he touched many lives and will be deeply missed.
