May 5, 1929 - June 10, 2019
Arthur Lloyd Still, 90 of Milwaukie, Oregon, went to be with his savior
June 10, 2019, after he succumbed to his battle with dementia.
Arthur was born May 5, 1929, to Clarence and Daisy Still in the
Dalles, Oregon. At the age of 3, his mother was sent to a mental hospital
where she remained until her death. Unable to care for all his family his
father moved to California to work and periodically sent money to support
his children. One of Arthur’s earliest memories was sitting on the curb with
his brothers holding their little suitcases waiting to be picked up by Child
Services Division. He rarely saw his mother and only saw his father a
couple of times as an adult. Eventually Arthur spent the next few years with
his brothers at the Children’s Farm Home in Corvallis, Oregon.
During his younger years Arthur was farmed out regularly to elderly
people to work for room and board. Often he would have to get up early,
perform his chores, go to work washing dishes, then make it to school on
time. During his teen years, Arthur moved in with relatives who had strong
Chrisitian beliefs. At age 15 he accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and
Savior. Arthur moved around to several different schools making it hard to
develop lasting friendships. He ended up graduating high school in
McMinnville, Oregon.
After high school, Arthur joined the Army National Guard for a short
period. He then joined the Air Force where he served as an airplane
mechanic during the Korean War era. During his time in the military he felt
a definite calling from God to serve his Lord as a minister.
After Arthur’s discharge from the military, he enrolled in Cascade
College in Portland, Oregon. While at Cascade he met his future wife Joan
Gould. They were happily married a year and a half later. They remained
married for 63 years until his death.
After graduation from Cascade College, following God’s calling,
Arthur enrolled in Western Evangelical Seminary to become an ordained
minister. During his time in seminary his first two children were born. He
subsequently had three more children during the early years of his time in
the ministry.
In all Arthur served in the ministry for 31 years. He pastored in
several different churches around the Pacific Northwest. He presided over
scores of weddings, funerals, baptisms, and community events. His life
was always dedicated to serving others. He frequently put others needs
before his own.
After retirement from the ministry, Arthur eventually was diagnosed
with dementia. As his dementia progressed he moved into the Monterey
Court Memory Care facility to better meet his needs. He remained in this
facility until his death six years later.
Arthur was survived by his loving wife, Joan E. Still, age 86, and
children: Jeanette Still, age 61, James Still, age 59, Jeffrey Still, age 58,
Julie Still, age 56, and Joyce Ostby, age 55. He additionally had 6
grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Arthur had a long, productive life full of service to others. He will be
dearly missed.
Arthur’s celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, June 25, at 11:00
AM, at the Wichita Evangelical Church located at 9491 SE Wichita Ave.,
Milwaukie, Oregon, 97222. Immediately following the service a luncheon
will be provided at the church. At 2:00 PM a graveside honors ceremony
will be conducted at Willamette National Cemetery, located at 11800 SE Mt.
Scott Blvd., Happy Valley, Oregon, 97086. Please gather at Lincoln Memorial
Funeral Home no later than 1:30 pm to be led into Willamette National if you
plan to attend the honors ceremony.
