Orpha, I know you can get through this. You’re good and you’re strong and you have a lot of people around you who care. Art who has always been by your side will be watching you from up there.  He will be remembered as a good husband, quiet guy and a funny one too . He will be missed by our group from our lunch/dinner dates. May he Rest In Peace!🙏

For many years as I entered the Tigard Branch office of Vocational Rehabilitation to help support the VR counselors with vocational evaluation and testing, I always felt very warmly welcomed. But the warmest and dearest of most of those there was Art. I always tried to drop by his office to visit for a few minutes and sometimes for longer. Art was a true humanitarian. He had great humor, but I always remember how calm and stable a demeanor he had.  And my greatest memory was of  Art moving in his chair to my side of the desk whenever I entered his room to visit up-close and personal.  He lived a life wanting no barriers between himself and anyone else.  He was the embodiment of true joy and peace in a life. I so loved him and miss him now a lot.

I have known  Art for over 30 years.   We have a long history through our careers and friendship together.   He was a groomsman at my wedding,  I was his typist for his master's thesis.   We fantasized about going out in a blaze of glory, like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.  I always admired his humanity as he performed his duties as a V.R. Counselor.  I will miss a very good friend. 

I have countless memories of my dad, Art. And the vast majority of them are filled with laughter, joy, and heartfelt conversations. My favorites were the countless hours of phone calls spent catching up and swapping life’s stories. I can still hear his prideful compliments as my personal and professional life evolved. It was uplifting hearing that “your dad” was proud. 

He was a man I admired, respected, and loved. I will miss him.  My heart is broken.

Dear Art my second father,
I miss you so much and my family sure does too. Thank you for raising me and all the love and support you gave me for the past 10 years. I’m going to miss you but I know that you’re always with me every step I take and I treasure all the time we spent together. Thank you so much for giving me the unconditional love. We know Art only for a while.  
A good short 10 years.  
But in those years, every second he spent with us meant more.  He cared. He gave us his full attention.
He doesn't comprimise. He meant everything he said.  He was very kind and respectful. He instantly became a family to us.  
He also became a father figure to our son Gavin.
Everybody goes through a lot, but Art never complained about any of those.  He's always positive and happy. I guess, that's what we all missed from Art. 
He can always show his positive side in spite of pain and hardship he feels deep down inside. That's how Art was, from the last few months til his last few.  He was smiling and happy to see everyone in a very honest way.  
We miss you Art, and our "little boy" miss you more.  We are among the lucky ones to have met you too. 

Dearest Orpha and beloved family of Art, 
I am so very sorry for the loss of your sweet and precious Art.  The love and care    shared and lovingly given by sweet Orpha to her Art was so very special and defines what unconditional love is.  I know there is a huge and empty space now that he is gone from this earth, but his legacy and his love will be with you always.  He is your angel now❤️

I met Art when his wife worked at Maryville 30 years ago. Art always had a smile on his face and shared laughs with all of us. I had a nickname for him, 'Ort' and he would laugh and allowed me to tease him. He was so supportive of Orpha, bringing her lunch, hanging with the group for our gatherings, bbq at there home, Hagg lake, meal outings, and he always enjoyed himself. I admire Orpha for her dedication and love for Art for all the years of marriage, and much respect even more during the years of his illness. Art, you are going to be missed. Much love, hilee 💖

Art was one of the first two Vocational Rehab counselors I worked with as a new Youth Transition Specialist.   I appreciated his kindness, patience, and humor so much, as did our mutual clients.   He was missed after he retired; I was  saddened to hear of his passing.  My sincerest condolences to the family. 

We are fortunate to have known Art, a warm and a caring brother to us.  A very supportive son to our parents who then lived here for quite sometime.

We fondly called him “Balababog”, a term he used when we speak our mother tongue. We will miss the fun and laughter and the stories we shared together during our visits here in Portland.

Your journey might be over but you will always be remembered of your endless love for our family, of your courage to fight for life, of your laughter even when you are at your lowest point, for being an inspiration to us.

We love you so dearly but God loves you more and He sets you free.  You maybe gone for now but you live forever in our memories and in our heats.

We will miss you. Rest in peace.

My Dearest Brother, My heart is broken but you are whole. You ran the race  of life of life like a champion and now you are the winner because you are home. Mom and I miss you more than words can express. Thank you for the wonderful memories until we are all together again.

Arturo was a friend and a brother to me if there was a person in this world to be with is Arturo what a kind person he was . I never knew of Art say anything  negative of anyone. I will miss him dearly  our only discussion that we  never agreed was who the better team was the Portland TrailBlazers or the Seattle Sonic, well Art no more Sonic so you win . I will miss you Arturo  like I said I will look over your  mom and Diane . Love Johnny 

Arturo De La Cruz that’s how you identified yourself during your last few months in these world,  but honestly you’re always been my Artie .   We sure had a roller coaster ride the last few years but just to let you know ,  I’m so proud of how you handled everything with grace and dignity.  I feel sense of relief knowing you’re now in the hands of Our Lord with no more pain and suffering,  am very happy for you .   There’s a big void in my life now that you’re gone but I keep hearing your voice echoing  “You take care”!    Yes, I will take care my Artie until we meet  again. I worked with Art for about 4 years at the Office of Vocational Rehabilitation Services, Washington County when the office was on Cascade Blvd in Tigard.  Art helped me solidify my career choice of Vocational Rehabilitation and was instrumental in helping me get an internship at the Washington County office.  I remember Art dragging me into Dan Irwin's (then the branch manager) office to discuss an internship.  Art believed I had potential in the rehab business  even when I still had my own doubts after I suffered the traumatic onset of spinal cord injury at the age of 29.  Art really exemplified for me the ability to provide a professional, caring, counseling relationship and also not take everything in life so seriously.  Art always had time for a joke, a story, or experiencing a life moment that really mattered in the midst of a job that often seems overwhelming.  I feel really fortunate that I had Art to help me  through some tough times and form my early impressions about counseling.  

I worked with Art at Vocational Rehabilitation for several years. I will always be grateful for the support he offered me when I worked in Pendleton and his unfailing kindness and humor. Art was the guy who always showed up when one of us was hospitalized or too sick to make it to work. Such a dear man. He will be sorely missed, and I am certain he will be wrapped in love, joking and lighting paths from his perch on high. Rest well in peace and joy, dear friend. 

As I look back on all the time we spent together I smile and laugh at the fun and good times we shared! Costume parties, lunches at the good ole BK, and many games of basketball at the gym (which of course I won). So many memories I am thankful for, so many chats I will never forget. Your sense of humor, your smile and your quick wit were always something to look forward to. You, my dear father in law, will be deeply missed by so many.  

Art and I worked together for five years he showed me a lot of the ropes of Oregon vocational rehabilitation and how to get through the stress. He was the older hat that always kept this young hat right sized a great man who served others well and made major differences in others lives Richard

I’m very sad to hear that my friend and colleague from years past has left us. Arturo was a warm and caring person who always had time to spend with colleagues talking about anything but work. He was fun-loving and had a big heart. I will miss his mischievous laughter from across the hall as he and Ron (another colleague who left us too soon) planned their zany escapades, which they’re likely doing now, somewhere in the afterlife. My deepest condolences go out to Orpha and the rest of the family for your loss.
