Barry Ray West

A funeral service for long time Portland resident, Barry Ray West, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Thursday, February 3, 2011, in Lincoln Memorial Park and Funeral Home. A reception for family and friends will follow the service in the funeral home reception hall. Committal service will be held at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland, Oregon.

Barry was born June 20, 1946, in Leon, Iowa, to Ray and Marie West. He grew up between California and Oregon and graduated from David Douglass High School in Portland, Oregon. He later completed his academic career, attending and graduating from Portland State University with a Bachelor of Science degree, and from the University of Portland with a Master of Education degree. He was also a proud veteran of the U.S. Navy.

In 1967, Barry married the love of his life, Lynn (Edner) West. This union was existent for 43 years, till death did them part. They had two children, Jennifer and James. Barry was a teacher for over 30 years. He taught at Damascus Middle School and Highland Elementary School. He loved to teach, loved his family, and his grandchildren were, "the light of his world!"

Barry is survived by his wife, Lynn West; children, Jennifer Kresek, and James West; parents, Ray and Marie West; siblings, Vicki Higbee, Bobby West, and Roger West; and grandchildren, Ashley Kresek, John-Michael Kresek, Bryce West, and Sydney West. The family requests that all donations be made to the American Cancer Society.
