Bernard John Smith

Bernard was born in Portland Oregon to William and Rose Smith on May 5, 1929. He grew up in a house near Overlook Park that his parents had built. He went to Blessed Sacrament Grade School. He was an altar boy at St. Stanislaus Catholic Church. He attended Benson Tech High School.

He served in the Army during the Korean War. He was in the 1st Calvary and spent a good portion of his enlistment in combat.

In 1954 he married Irene Hazel Suomy. They were married for 42 years before her death in 1996. They had five children. He worked at Armour's Meat Packing for 29 years.

Bernie is survived by his sons Steven (Barbara), Bruce (Tracy), Jeff Sr. (Jennifer); daughters Kathy (Nate) and Sheryl; grandchildren Jeff Jr. (Lauren), Blake (Brittni), Shelby and Jassmine; great-grandchildren Kale, Cohen, Kai and Silas.

He was preceded in death by his parents William and Rose; brother Frederick (Pat) and wife Irene.

The funeral will be held on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at 11:00 AM at Zeller Chapel of the Roses: 2107 NE Broadway St. Portland, OR 97232
