Calvin Robin Downey was born on May 11, 1924, to Jessie and Howard Downey in Ritzville, Washington. Calvin grew up farming in Yakima valley with his five siblings. He drove long haul truck for the Army Corps of Engineers during World War II. Calvin was a lifelong teamster and following the war drove for UPS, Montgomery Ward and Meier and Frank until his retirement in 1984. Following retirement he spent ten years as a Meals on Wheels volunteer.
Calvin loved good food, team sports and family. He was an original member of Portland’s NE Assembly of God Church and was active in youth ministries and sports programs. Calvin spent much of the 1960’s through 80’s, coaching youth sports in Northeast Portland.
Calvin is predeceased by his wife of 55 years, Eula Mae Downey. Calvin and Eula Mae provided a foster home to more than 19 children over a 20 year span. Calvin is survived by his sister and brother in law, Pat and Frank Veene of The Dalles; sister in law Faye Downey of The Dalles; son and daughter in law Ron and Jenifer Downey of Meridian, Idaho; son and daughter in law Calvin L. and Linda Downey of Portland; grand daughter Malina Downey of Tualatin; grand son and grand daughter Zach and Sarah Downey of Meridian Idaho and many nieces and nephews. Calvin has been laid to rest next to Eula Mae at Lincoln Memorial Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the Family recommends donations to Oregon Hospice Association.
