On November 13, 1946, in Tillamook, Ida and C. Lee Sherman were surprised with twins. Though his sister, Carol, was technically first in line to be born, Carl nabbed the title as a result of an emergency caesarian section. Carl spent his early years growing up along the Trask River. When Carl was 16 months old he suffered a stroke which, in combination with nerve damaged sustained during his delivery, left him paralyzed on one side of his body.
After a tragic logging accident claimed C. Lee’s life, the family moved to Gold Beach to live with Carl’s grandparents. At the age of six Carl moved to the Fairview Home in Salem. Carl again became a big brother when Ida married Harry Smith and welcomed Candace into the world. In October 1967, Carl moved to Columbia Park Training Center in The Dalles where he resided until 1975. He moved to Alveta Facility in Lincoln City until 1987 when the United Cerebral Palsy Association took charge of his care and he moved to Portland. In Portland Carl began working for the Association for the Blind, retiring in 2013.
Whether it was a trip to the State Fair to see Roy Rogers with his aunt, Mary, and cousin, Evelyn or a jet boat ride to Agnes to visit family, Carl was always up for an adventure. The U.C.P. allowed Carl to live a full life. While the benefits of the U.C.P. were many, some highlights for Carl include coordinated trips to Gold Beach to visit his parents; fulfilling his dream of flying in a plane when a caregiver arranged for him to fly to Seattle for the day and have lunch in the Space Needle; a trip on the Portland Spirit for a fancy dinner; and visits to pet stores. Carl loved animals and was the proud owner of a cat named Ida (after his mother) and two parakeets. He loved his coffee and he loved talking to people and making friends, something he did everywhere he went.
Carl will be greatly missed by his twin sister, Carol Loennig and her husband, Darrell, of Portland; sister, Candace Beebe and her husband, Andrew, of Lone Rock; nephew, Tim Loennig of Portland; nephew, Ben Loennig and his wife, Christie, of Gresham; niece, Faith Loennig of Portland; great-nephew, Luke Loennig of Gresham; a large extended family; friends and caregivers.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made in memory of Carl to United Cerebral Palsy of Oregon & SW Washington, 305 NE 102nd Avenue, Suite 100, Portland, Oregon 97220.
A Celebration of Carl’s life will be held at 2 o’clock on March 21st, 2014 at Omega, 223 SE 122nd Ave, Portland, Oregon 97233.
Arrangements under the direction of Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, Portland, OR.
