He was born in Korea on September 30, 1938, to Young-bin Roe and Nam-suk Shim.
Choong immigrated to the United States from Korea in 1965 to study business administration.
He first attended the University of Oregon and later received an MBA from Golden Gate University.
In 1969, Choong married Kyung Ja. They had two children, Andrew and Bryan. Choong was a loving and devoted husband and father. He loved spending time with his family, as he once told his children that the secret to happiness in life was family. He often took his family on camping trips all over the Pacific Northwest.
Choong was a kind and gentle soul that was quiet and could often be found tinkering with the latest electronic gadgets. He was a friend to everyone he met. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Choong is survived by his sister Young Ja Shim; his wife of 54 years, Kyung Ja Roe; his sons, Andrew and Bryan; his daughter in law Karen; and his four grandchildren, Simon, Nathan, Elijah, and Elizabeth.
A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, July 13, 2023, at Finley Sunset Hills Mortuary, 6801 SW Sunset Hwy, Portland, OR 97225.
