Del was born on August 25, 1943, in Portland, Oregon, to Charles and Frances Olson Ware, and was raised there, where he developed a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors and the quiet pursuits that brought him peace and joy. As a teenager, he served his country in the United States Navy aboard the USS Prairie from 1961 to 1964, where he learned the foundry trade that would shape his future.
On August 23, 1980, Del married the love of his life, Kathy Jordan Ware, in Shreveport, Louisiana. Their marriage became an improbable and enduring love story—one marked by unmistakable chemistry, easy laughter, and meaningful companionship. In his own words, “We love each other with a mental and physical attraction that has never ebbed.” Kathy remained Del’s closest partner and truest friend throughout their life together.
Del spent most of his working years as a molder at Columbia Steel Casting, where he was known for his strong work ethic, craftsmanship, and pride as a union member. He was delighted to retire in 2004, embracing the freedom to enjoy the simple pleasures he loved most. He found happiness in boating, fishing, shooting pool, birdwatching, playing chess, reading, solving jigsaw puzzles, watching sports, and taking road trips. He loved Westerns, The Moody Blues, and had a deep interest in all things related to World War II.
Del had a twinkle in his eye, a rich, deep voice, and loved to whistle. He had a gift for storytelling, often blending humor with imagination. He was playful, genuine, and always authentic—sometimes gruff on the exterior, but guided by a warm and generous heart.
Del is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy Ware; daughters Elke Bousson (Stephane) and Brandi DeMerse (Richard); daughter-in-law Dawn Ware; grandsons Brady Ware and Tanner Ware; and granddaughter Carley DeMerse. “No man could be more proud of his grandchildren.” He was preceded in death by his son, Brad Ware. Del is also lovingly remembered by family members including siblings Roger Ware (Jaci), Carolyn Hodges, and Judie Bonito (Bob), along with many nieces, nephews, godchildren, and friends who were charmed by his stories and mischievous nature.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Del’s memory to the Bird Alliance of Oregon, honoring his love of nature and birdwatching, or to The Library Foundation.
A Celebration of Del’s Life is tentatively set for April 20th.
His ashes will be buried at Willamette National Cemetery in the spring.
“There will come a time when you believe everything is finished; that will be the beginning.”
