

Donald "Don" Eugene Callender passed away peacefully on June 11, 2025, in Vancouver, Washington. He was a man of great dedication, service, and compassion, whose life touched many and left a lasting legacy of love and commitment.
Born and raised in Indiana, he attended elementary and high school locally before pursuing higher education. Driven by a deep passion to help others, he earned a bachelor’s degree in social work and psychology from Ball State University and a Master of Social Work (MSW) from the University of Louisville.
He answered the call to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Army on September 24, 1968. He served honorably during the Vietnam War and was recognized with numerous military honors, including:
Bronze Star Medal
Air Medal
Army Commendation Medal
National Defense Service Medal
Vietnam Service Medal with two Bronze Service Stars
Vietnam Campaign Medal with "60" Device
Aircraft Crewman Badge
He was honorably discharged on August 1, 1972.
After his military service, he devoted 30 years to the Portland, Oregon VA, retiring in 2010. His distinguished career included serving as Director of the hospital-based home care program, facilitating a group for Prisoners of War, and retiring as Chief of Social Work and Chaplain Service. In recognition of his exceptional service to Veterans, he received the Hands and Hearts Award, a testament to his unwavering commitment to those he served.
In retirement, he enjoyed many pursuits that brought him joy and fulfillment. He loved golf, took up stained glass art, and was an avid runner. He completed five half marathons and proudly ran the Portland Marathon. He was also a devoted music lover, especially of "The Blues," and attended over 80 concerts by a wide range of legendary artists, including Janis Joplin, The Rolling Stones, and Jimi Hendrix.
Above all, he wanted to be remembered as a loving father and grandfather, a generous supporter of multiple charities, and a man who lived life with passion and kindness.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia; son, Justin (Christina); daughter, Samantha; step-daughter, Nicole (Joe); and grandchildren Shyann, Maverick, Lewie, Max, and Audrey. He is also survived by his brother, Mark, and his mother, Rosanna Markley of Logansport, Indiana.
A graveside service with military honors for Don will be held Wednesday, July 9, 2025 at 11:30 AM at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt Scott Blvd, Happy Valley, OR 97086.
