

Edith I. VanDiggelen was born February 16, 1917, in Gotebo, OK, to Jesse and Bessie McMullin; one of 14 children. She attended school in Colony, OK through 8th grade. At age 17, she married Edward Smith and gave birth to her daughter, Juanita at age 19. They remained married until Edward's death in 1942. She moved to Portland in 1948. She later married Joseph Burnett and gave birth to their son, Lonnie. Many years later, she married Stan VanDiggelen. They had no children and remained married until his death in 1992.
Edith is survived by her daughter, Juanita Phillips; her sisters, Callie McMullin, Violet McMullin, and Lillian Lewellen ; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and nine great great-grandchildren.
Edith was preceded in death by her son, Lonnie, and her husbands, Edward and Stan.
Edith enjoyed square dancing and bowling, and was involved in Royal Neighbors of America with her husband Stan. She always had fresh cookies when her grandchildren came to visit.
Viewing will be Wednesday, November 10, 2010 from 9AM to 5PM.
Services will be held Thursday, November 11th at 1:00 pm at Caldwell's, Hennessey, Goetsch & McGee Funeral Home, 20 NE 14th Ave., Portland, OR 97232.
