Floyd was born in Portland, Oregon to Floyd Jr. and Mary Hendren. Floyd graduated in 1969 from Lincoln High School and attended Portland Community College, studying geology, history and welding. Floyd received an Associate’s Degree as well as becoming a Certified Welder.
He worked in shipping and receiving for Northern Specialties, a wholesale toy distributor in St. Johns, and Floating Point Systems in Beaverton before joining the family business, Hendren Tow Boat Company, where he worked as a deckhand.
In 1974 Floyd met Kathy Werner on a blind date. They married on June 7, 1982 in Vancouver, Washington and enjoyed nearly 34 years of marriage.
Floyd loved history, enjoyed the flora, fauna and geology of the outdoors, loved hiking, especially along the Columbia River Gorge, and always looked forward to annual trips to Olallie Lake. He was also a lifelong John Wayne fan, loved to read and loved cows as well as going to rodeos.
He was friendly and very much a people person and became friends with everyone he met. As soon as you met him you felt as though you had known him your whole life. Even though he did not want to be the center of attention he managed to bring joy and laughter through his renowned joke telling and annual appearance as Santa Claus at the Leedy Grange Hall in Cedar Mill (a tradition started at age 16).
On May 11, 2016, Floyd left this world far too soon surrounded by the love of his family. He will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his wife, Kathy; sisters, Judy Webster and Ruby Hill; brother, Lee Hendren; and countless nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended family.
Family and friends will gather to celebrate his life at 1pm on Wednesday, May 25, 2016 at Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. In place of flowers the family would like you to donate to the American Cancer Society.
Arrangements under the direction of Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home, Portland, OR.
