

On September 18, 1919 Gertrude Althea Helms was born in Portland, Oregon to Robert and Althea (Struve) Helms. On August 25, 1940, she married Peter John Lyski at Assumption Church in Portland.
Althea raised four children, Peter Jr., Kathie, Jerome, and Andrea. Outside of the home she worked as a Tax Preparer for H & R Block for 49 years and held a Federal Tax Preparer’s License.
She was a member of the Oregon Association of Tax Consultants, the Oregon State Grange, Pomona Grange, and Leedy Grange #339 where she held the offices of Secretary and Treasurer. Althea also enjoyed membership with the Multnomah Channel Yacht Club and the Road Runner Square Dance Club.
After her husband’s retirement the couple traveled to Alaska, Western Canada, SW and Western areas of the US, and along the East Coast to Delaware, New York City, and Washington, D.C. They also enjoyed an inland cruise up the Alaskan coast, and a cruise along the west coast of Mexico as well as many sunny days spent at the beach locally.
Althea enjoyed a cruise through the Panama Canal.
On April 3, 2017, Althea passed away at Whitewood Gardens in Portland. She is survived by her children, Peter, Jr., and wife Marilou Lyski, Kathie Althea Yeager, Jerome Frank and, wife, Ilene Lyski, and Andrea Lee Muma; brother, Jim Helms; sister, Roberta Helms; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-granddaughter; and an extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Peter, Sr.; brother, Robert Girtle; sister, Pat Pearson; and one great-grandson.
Visitation will be held from 4-8 p.m. on Thursday, April 20, 2017 at Skyline Memorial Gardens Funeral Home. On Friday, April 21, 2017 a rosary will be held at 10:30 a.m. followed by Mass at 11:00 a.m., both at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Portland. She will be privately laid to rest in Skyline Memorial Gardens. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to brain cancer research.
