Gary Lynn Hester was born in Wood River, Illinois, to Glen and Althalia Hester and raised in Myrtle Point, Oregon. After attending the Oregon Institute of Technology, Gary built a long and respected career, retiring from the City of Portland.
In 1995, Gary married the love of his life, Diana. The two shared sixteen wonderful years together before she was called home in 2011. Their marriage was guided by faith in Jesus and filled with travel, the joys of retirement, time with grandchildren, and one of Gary’s favorite pastimes, enjoying Diana’s home-cooked meals!
After many years at Grace Community Church in Gresham, Gary moved to Bend in 2021 to be closer to family and enjoy the sunshine of the high desert. His faith remained a cornerstone of his life until his final days.
Gary is survived by his children and stepchildren Sharon (Mario), Glen (Elaine), Holly (Walt), and Brian (Sarah); seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and his sisters Helen and Lila.
Gary taught us, by example, what it means to love and stand by family without condition. A man of few words, he showed his love through quiet strength, steady generosity, and selfless support for those around him. He enjoyed hunting, building projects, and spending time with the people he loved most—always looking forward to the next visit, the next project, or the next chance to help someone in need. He loved deeply, gave freely, and lived faithfully.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Diana, and we rejoice knowing they are together again in the presence of their Savior.
A memorial service will be held on October 24, 2025. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to organizations close to Gary’s heart: CRU (Jesse and Bethany Schlender), First Image, or Grace Community Church in Gresham.
