He was born in Pueblo, Colorado, on May 19, 1938. He graduated with his bachelor's degree in History and Psychology at Adams State College and his Masters in History and Psychology at the University of Oregon. He married the love of his life, Carolyn Ann Vaternick, on August 16, 1965. George had a long and rewarding career as a history professor at Portland Community College for over 50 years. He was able to travel alongside his wife to many countries, coming back with stories and inspiration for his children and granddaughters. George loved nothing more than to spend time with his family. Attending every sporting event, reading over every school essay, and assisting Carolyn in the kitchen as the best at-home sous chef you could ask for. He was always there when family or friends needed him, no matter what.
He was survived by his children Paul [Donna], Jason and Melina [Ivan], and his grandchildren Ceana, Marissa, Julieta, Lindsey, and Parissa. He will be remembered for his love of Croatia, his hearty laugh, comforting singing voice, warm hands, and big heart. He was the best father, grandfather, and teacher. He was so strong and will be eternally missed. We love you, Volimo te djede.
