Even without a complete formal education Janette was quite intelligent and sophisticated. As a teenager she married and started a family, quickly learning the essentials of motherhood.
Having lived in Louisiana, Chicago, and Eastern Washington, she eventually settled in Portland Oregon in the mid 1970’s helping raise some of her grandchildren while providing daycare services out of her home.
Janette willingly shared childhood experiences and wisdom with many.
Said to be ‘built with the stuff that old soldiers were made of” she was strong willed, independent and had a warrior mentality always determined to conquer even the greatest challenges of life. She was also feminine, elegant and very well dressed.
Janette had a long time affiliation with the Jehovah’s Witness where she was known by many in the community having spent many hours in field service.
Often heard saying “I love everybody” she was the matriarch of the family and will be greatly missed.
Janette was preceded in death by her parents Adele Jacque & Albert Shields, siblings Gerta Eva Shields, Cecilia Taylor, Albert Shields, Dorsey Shields Sr, Claiborne Shields, Joenel Shields, Lawrence Shields, Clarence ‘Borda’ Shields and by her only son John Holliday Jr.
