

Jeanne Carroll Lincoln (1928-2016) Jeanne Carroll Lincoln died as a result of injuries suffered in a traffic accident on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2016. Born on September 23, 1928 in Portland, Oregon, she was the daughter of John Henry Carroll and Ethel Snow Carroll. She graduated from St. Rose School, Holy Child Academy (class of 1946), the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (BM), and New York University (MM). Jeanne married Robert Dix Lincoln, also a Conservatory graduate, on December 27, 1950 at St. Rose Church in Portland, and settled with him in Johnson City, Tennessee where she performed and briefly taught elementary music , prior to starting a family. She resided in France twice during the early years of her marriage when Bob received fellowships to study music there, and remained a lifelong Francophile, returning to Paris frequently over the years. In 1957 Jeanne moved to New Jersey where Bob had accepted a teaching position at Douglass College (Rutgers University); she returned to graduate school at New York University and received her master’s degree in music while also raising her daughter Elizabeth and son John. Jeanne was an associate professor of music at Jersey City State College for over twenty years, teaching voice and music education and supervising student teachers. Throughout these years she also performed extensively as a mezzo-soprano, often accompanied by her husband on the piano. She developed many close and lasting relationships with both colleagues and students. Upon retirement Jeanne, Bob and son John moved to Portland, a place they knew well as Jeanne’s birthplace and home of many close family members. Jeanne spent countless hours caring for her family. Known to her three grandsons as Grandma, she was dearly loved and will be deeply missed. Jeanne is survived by her son John Carroll Lincoln, her daughter Elizabeth Carroll Lincoln and son-in-law William Seidman, grandsons David (wife Julia) Seidman, James (wife Lia Carpeneti) Seidman and Andrew Seidman, great-granddaughters Evelyn Seidman and Ida Seidman, sister-in-law Dorothy Lincoln, brother-in-law Nick (wife Hazel) Lincoln, and fourteen nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, brother John Carroll, and sister Patricia Carroll Leitschuh. A memorial funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on March 11, 2017 at St. Rose of Lima Church, Portland.
