Nov. 3, 1933 - Jan. 3, 2021
Our beloved mother, grand- mother and great-grandmother, Joan Mary Cassidy passed away Jan. 3, 2021, after a valiant struggle with cancer.
Joan was born in Scholls, Ore., and grew up in S.E. Portland in the St. Philip Neri Parish with her parents Frank and Margaret Hanson and her brother Jack. She graduated from St. Mary's Academy in 1951 and married Robert Cassidy in 1955.
They raised five children in N.E. Portland in the Madeleine Parish where she was actively involved in all of her children's activities. She began her professional career in real estate at Ambassador Realty followed by many years as a Property Manager for City of Portland and Lambert Airport in St. Louis, Mo. She received her BA in Communication at the age of 53 from Marylhurst College before retiring to a life of travel and caring for her grandchildren. A Renaissance woman, she loved to share her thoughts and opinions on current events as well as sharing triumphs and adventures of her busy family.
She met her current husband, Frank Hynes, on one of her many trips abroad and he became the love of her life. They were married for eight wonderful years until her passing.
Our Mom was a character who did not suffer fools lightly. She was funny, educated and spoke her mind often. You always knew where you stood with her and she was constantly interested in the details of her children and grandchildren's lives. Mom was an inspiration to all of us and most importantly loved her children unconditionally.
Joan is survived by husband, Frank Hynes; and children, Maureen (Gary), Paul (Sally), Matthew (Anne), Sheila (Ross) and Monica. She also is survived by 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Due to Covid restrictions there will be a small family Mass at All Saints. We plan to host a celebration of our Mom's life at a later date.
