John Henry Lewis

John Henry Lewis, 78, passed away on October 9, 2025, in Portland, Oregon. Born on December 6, 1946, in New Orleans, Louisiana, he was the beloved son of Arbunia Madison and Isaiah Lewis. He was raised in Pasadena, California, where he began a life marked by resilience, humor, and deep devotion to family and community.

John attended Pasadena High School and continued his education at Pasadena City College. Over the years, he held many jobs that reflected his diverse interests and strong work ethic. Among his favorites were working at Pacific Stereo, selling and installing lift equipment, driving trucks, and most notably, driving a school bus. Driving the school bus held a special place in his heart—he often referred to the children he transported as “his babies,” a testament to the care and pride he took in that role.

Throughout his life, John was known for his boisterous laugh—a signature expression of joy that often came with a hearty grab of the shoulder, arm, or leg of whoever happened to be nearby. His laughter was infectious and unforgettable.

A man of great personal strength and commitment, John celebrated over 34 years of sobriety. His sober family became an essential part of his life’s foundation and one of his proudest achievements. The support and camaraderie he found within that community brought him immense fulfillment.

John had a passion for adventure and creativity. He enjoyed skiing down snowy slopes and heading out on deep sea fishing trips. Music was another lifelong love—he spent countless hours listening to it and had recently taken up learning to play the guitar.

In the final two and a half years of his life, John shared a loving partnership with Sharon Hollamon. Together they made their home in Portland, traveled, fished, and supported one another deeply.

He leaves behind a loving family who will carry forward his memory: his children Robyn Leaf (David), Jayson John Lewis, and Taylor Madison Lewis (Amy); grandchildren Dominic, Alvin III, Acacia, Gareod (children of Robyn); Isabella, Taylor Jude, Julian, Oliver (children of Jayson); River and Emmitt (children of Taylor); as well as great-grandchildren Camden John and Olivia (children of Dominic), Kamilah and Alvin IV (children of Alvin III), and Emery (child of Gareod).

John Henry Lewis lived a full life defined by love for family, dedication to personal growth, laughter shared with friends old and new, and an enduring spirit that touched all who knew him. May his memory bring comfort to those who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held on November 8, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Ross Hollywood Chapel 4733 NE Thompson St.
