

John was born in Astoria, Oregon to Bedford Forrest Smith and Ailene Vieno Heikkila. He was the third of four children. Brother Forrest D. (Denny) Smith, sisters Belva J. Duncan, and Mary Gertrude Manning. Many nieces and nephews. John moved to Portland when he was 12 years old.
He married ValRae L. Smith and leaves behind three children, sons Stephen of Vancouver, WA., Michael of Wilsonville, OR., a daughter Jennifer Albers (Corey) of Portland, OR., and five grandchildren, William Haneman, Laura, Peter, and Amanda Smith, and Cameron Albers.
John served as a sergeant in the US Army during the Korean War.
He worked much of his life for Union Carbide until they closed. He worked briefly for Oregon Steel and finished his career at Goodwill Industries.
John loved the mountains and the beach. He built a cabin on Mt. Hood. He loved skiing and spent many weekends there with friends. He also had a house in Seaside, where months at a time were spent with family and friends. He loved to build and re-model. The beach house grew from 2 bedrooms and one bath to 4 bedrooms and two baths and more living quarters. It was enjoyed by all.
John was loved by all and will be dearly missed.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations in John's name be made to the American Cancer Society.
