The family later moved to Lodi, WI, before settling in a cabin in the woods near Rock Springs, WI, when Jon was five. Jon grew up off the grid with wood heat, solar, and wind power, and a childhood filled with adventure, family, and friends. He graduated from Reedsburg Area High School in 2007. During high school, he became an adept carpenter, working alongside his dad and brother on remodeling jobs in the family business.
After high school, Jon worked at Beaver Creek Ski Resort in Colorado, where he loved honing his snowboarding skills. He eventually landed in Portland, OR, where his Uncle Scott took him under his wing and hired him to help rebuild his sailboat. Jon quickly became skilled at building and refurbishing boats, impressing many in the marina and launching a short but successful career in boat repair. He even braved sailing the open ocean, including a trip to Alaska on a boat he helped build, and lived to tell the tale. Jon was a fixer, a creator, and a master tinkerer; there wasn’t a problem he couldn’t solve with his creativity and extraordinary tactile intuition.
For all his knack for tinkering, Jon was also book smart, earning his degree in electrical engineering from Portland State University in 2020. Jon began his engineering career installing and repairing the equipment needed to manufacture computer chips for Intel. Most recently, Jon worked at LAM Research and Development where he truly enjoyed his team. He was excited about solving problems in chip manufacturing and was eager to keep learning and growing his engineering skills.
Jon was a tree climber, a zip liner, a creek enthusiast, and a lover of nature. He loved snowboarding, hiking, and traveling. He was always up for a wild climbing adventure with his brother – it never seemed like anything truly scared him.
At home, Jon loved to lie on the floor and blast Steely Dan, absorbing himself in the music without concern for the wild and deafening level of the decibels. Jon was an amazing and unique dancer who was once called out by a band for his inspiring moves. A fantastic drummer, Jon probably could have pursued music as a career if he had chosen to.
He had the best sense of humor – a wonderful blend of wit, silliness, and irreverence. Being around him meant there was always something to laugh about, and we can still hear his laughter ringing in our ears.
Jon was brave and big-hearted; he wore his heart on his sleeve and wasn’t afraid to show it. He had so much love to give, and he gave it freely, openly, and without hesitation. He loved his friends and family fiercely and always made sure everyone was taken care of. He worked hard to stay in touch. In recent years, he was particularly close to his cousin Amy and his Grandma Gilbertson. His brother’s family moved to Portland in 2022, and they are deeply grateful for the time they were able to share with him and the bond he built with his nephew Wesley, who adored him. We will always think of the St. Johns Bridge near Jon’s home as “Uncle Jon’s Bridge.”
Jon’s memory will never cease to amaze and inspire those who loved him. He will always be in our hearts and will be dearly missed – until eternity comes.
Remaining to cherish Jon’s memory are his parents, James and Sarah; brother, Peter (Stella Veazey); nephew, Wesley; grandmothers, Marilyn Lampman and Barbara Gilbertson; maternal aunts and uncles, Peter Gilbertson (Ellen DePrey), Susan Gilbertson (Heiko Miles), and Karl (Katerina) Gilbertson; paternal aunts and uncles, Linden Lampman (Scott Maxwell), Sharon (David) Robinson, and Sandra (Richard) Pierce; cousins, Karl (Elizabeth) Seume and their children Amelie, James, Benjamin, Gabriel, and Matthew; Erik Seume; Colin Maxwell (Kriti Sharma) and their son Ashoka; Amy Maxwell (Darik Hunt); Katie Robinson; Alex Robinson (Julie Wedig) and their children Remy and Wynn; Ben (Hannah) Robinson and their children James and Theodore; and many close friends.
Jonathan was preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Richard Victor Gilbertson, and paternal grandfather, James Clarence Lampman.
