Jonathan Lino Toral was born in Carson, California, on August 10, 1984. His life transitioned from Southern California and so he grew up in Oregon City, Oregon, and graduated from Grand View Christian Academy in 2002.
After graduating, Jon immediately joined the United States Marine Corps. When asked why he joined, he made it a point to say, “my mommy made me do it,” referring to the positive values she had instilled in him his whole life. He served honorably for four years, and received his discharge in 2006, at the rank of Lance Corporal.
Jon continued his higher education following his military service. He went on to receive his Associate of Arts Oregon Transfer, and Associate of Applied Science – Criminal Justice degrees from Clackamas Community College.
On December 12, 2012, Jon married Yvonne Youngblood. The couple was blessed to raise six children together, Jack, Kate, Krysten, Noah, Kara, and Brenden. They also had two grandchildren, Olivia and Maya.
Jon had many jobs throughout his life, but was especially proud of his security work for the Standard Insurance buildings in downtown Portland. He had worked his way up to Security Site Supervisor, and found purpose in keeping the tenants safe through riots and turmoil.
Jon was committed to giving back to his brothers in arms; he maintained his military connections through social media outlets, and was happy to join the VFW with his sister.
Being the last son of a Pastor, Jon always displayed deep faith. Starting in the fourth grade, he rode the church bus, and became involved in various ministries of Grand View Baptist Church, including the Bus Ministry, Children’s Church, Spanish Ministry, Spanish youth group, and special singing groups. Most recently, he taught the fourth grade Sunday School alongside his mother.
Among many hobbies, Jon enjoyed watching movies; going to see the latest releases on opening day was a favorite family pastime. His love of comics and action heroes started very young, and he was able to merge his career with his hobbies by always asking to be a part of the security for Comic Cons in Portland.
Jon had the ability to make friends wherever he went. He made people feel as though they had been friends for years, and would continue to be for years to come. His easy-going attitude, and understanding that each person has a different journey on this earth, allowed him to be accepted into many different hearts. He brought joy and silliness to any situation, and never lost his ability to share his laugh with others, no matter how hard the realities of life may have been bombarding him.
Jon passed away November 20, 2021, in Portland, Oregon. He is survived by his loving wife, Yvonne; six children; two grandchildren; mother, Blanca Skaggs; stepfather, Richard Skaggs; grandmother, Juana Sanchez; three sisters; eight brothers; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts, and friends.
