Lee attended Laurelhurst Grade School and graduated from Grant High School in 1946.
He went to Stanford University and graduated in 1950, then attended Stanford Law School, graduating in 1953.
He joined the Army in 1954. As the war was over, there were not many officer billets. He had his draft notice, but the board delayed as they wanted him to wait to come in as an officer. Lee got tired of waiting around for an opening, so he joined and went in as enlisted and trained at Ft. Ord, CA, where he completed his specialist school with the 51st Field Artillery Battalion. He was assigned to HQ &HQ Svc Co.; 601st OBAR; 6th Infantry Division
In 1974, for his generous support, Lee was designated as a Marion Rice Kirkwood Fellow of the Stanford Law School.
