Lockert, Leonard E. 94 May 13, 1917 Jan. 15, 2012 Leonard E. Lockert passed away on January 15, 2012. He was 94 years old. Len was born in Seattle on May 13, 1917. He was the first child born to Andor Lockert and Cardena Hagman Lockert. His mother said he was born laughing. He graduated from the University of Washington in 1940 with a Bachelor of Science degree. In July 1941, he received an appointment as an aviation cadet. He was subsequently commissioned a second lieutenant in the Air Corps. He met Mary Caroline Knapp in the fall of 1942 and they were married August 21, 1943. In November 1943, he was assigned to the Headquarters 70th Fighter Wing for duty in England. He subsequently participated in the Normandy invasion. After two years in Europe, Len returned to Portland as a major. He joined the Joseph B. Knapp Company, Inc. as a lumber trader. Over the years he built the firm into a thriving business. In 1991, he passed on the presidency of Knapp Lumber Sales, Inc. to his son Andrew G. Lockert. A devoted husband, father and son, Len was fiercely loyal to his family. His unwavering belief in his children provided the bedrock for their lives. His love made them believe they could do anything. And, even as adults, they knew he would always be there with words of encouragement or a lifeline, if needed. An avid sportsman, Len loved fly-fishing and hunting. His quest for the best of those sports took him from the backcountry of Alaska to the mountains of Argentina. Fall brought bird hunting at a private ranch in Eastern Oregon. The rest of the year was devoted to golf. In the 1960s he raced his Dragon class sailboat on the Columbia River. Over the years, he also found time to contribute to the community. He served on the Vestry of Trinity Episcopal Church, as chairman of a Selective Service Board, president of the Portland Wholesale Lumberman's Association, member of the Asian Arts Council, Waverly Country Club and scoutmaster of the Riverdale Dunthorpe Scouts. A dynamic and charismatic man, Len embodied vitality. His dedication to the people he loved, his sense of humor, generosity and steadfastness in the face of adversity set him apart. We have all been enriched by his presence in our lives. His beloved wife, Mickey, preceded him in death. He is survived by his children, Andy Lockert and Laurie Lockert (Kathleen Roy) of Portland, and Ellen Lockert (Nina Jackson) of Bainbridge Island, WA, and Palm Springs, CA; as well as a grandchild, Michael Lockert Roy of Portland. A memorial service will be held at Trinity Episcopal Church on January 27, 2012, at 2 p.m. in the Chapel. Reception to follow at Trinity. Remembrances may be sent to the Mary Caroline Lockert Hospice Caregiver Education Endowment Fund at the Good Samaritan Foundation, P.0. Box 4484, Portland, OR 97208.
